You do not have to be a pro athlete or a supermodel to excel in sales, however you do need to be GREAT at what you do.
Sales is a type of game that if not played correctly can leave people bruised and broken looking for their next career. Selling in todays marketplace takes dedication, strategic planning, and work ethic. Why is this? Well, the competition is doing everything that you are doing so why would the customer buy from you?
This is the question that you must ask yourself everyday. What makes you competitive and why the buyer should choose you. If you cannot answer these two simple questions you must love to be punished or just flat-out lazy.
So what’s the answer? there are many, but I feel the most important is “BE THE EXPERT” in your field. If you know your products, your competitors products, the landscape, and the local marketplace you are a true value to your clients. Once they figure this out or you show them, the sales will follow.
Well that was easy, unfortunately it’s not. Being an expert takes time and dedication, I have been in my current role for over a year and I’m still learning about my products, services, customers, and competitors. To be an expert you need to commit to reading about your field at least an hour every day. Examples of material to read includes: journals, newspapers, local business publications, books, blogs, websites, and many more.
The good news is that if you are willing to put in the work that most of your competitors are not, this alone will put you in the top echelon of sales professionals. My closing promise is that if you are armed with this information and you LISTEN to your customers needs, more times than not you will win the sale.
